New Forest Photography :: Maternity Shoot with Alice

family maternity

The importance of having maternity photos. Pregnancy is such a surreal time in life. There’s so many changes happening in the build up and getting ready for this new little being to enter your world. You’re unsure of exactly what lies ahead, and everyone tells you it’s the hardest and most amazing thing ever, which can be so confusing and contradicting. You give up things that you like (sushi, cheese, alcohol) not realising that these are small sacrifices compared to what’s to come. Nobody can tell you or prepare you for it. When this little person arrives, life changes forever, and you embrace it.

Taking maternity photos is such a good way to capture this in-between phase of life. While it’s in the process of changing, but hasn’t completely. It’s exciting, scary, bewildering, and beautiful. Having photos of your pregnant belly is a wonderful thing to look back on. I have a photo hanging in my son’s room of me when I was pregnant with him, and he loves pointing to my belly when I ask him where he is in the photo. Having this keepsake of this special time in my life is invaluable to me, and I hope it will be something that is special to him as well.

The best time to take maternity photos, in my opinion, is when you’re between 30 and 35 weeks. This way it’s before you get into that home stretch and you’re still comfortable enough to walk around, and get up and down from the ground. I love shooting maternity in natural locations or places with interesting architecture, or ideally a mixture of both.

Alice was such a trooper on this day and was so laid back about everything. She was easy-going and ready for everything that lay ahead. It was a pleasure shooting these for her.

This sweet family happens to our neighbours and friends. We are often given fresh eggs from their chickens. Little Jocelyn was born about 3 weeks before Cavanaugh, and Louise and I have spent many days commiserating celebrating as we navigate new motherhood together. It's so much easier with friends (and lots of coffee and cake). Being right in the forest is a photographer's dream, there is an endless choice of whimsical places. These images were taken in the field behind Louise and Nathan's house, and their fairytale back garden.

I am 100% positive that, no matter how old you are, your parents will love a photo of you more than anything in the world. And, if you manage to get your siblings in it as well, then you might as well have solved world hunger in their book. At least I'm pretty sure. Here we have a photographic family, who I was honored, thrilled, and slightly intimidated when I was asked to do their photos for them. Here's Andrew, Kelly and Kyle ::Hey guys, I'm trying to take a photo, can you just look at me for a second?

Is there anything better than Autumn in the forest? The colours around me right now are so beautiful, and when the sun is out, like it is today, it all glows this golden luminescent light. My only complaint are the short days. I really struggle with it. But a little photoshoot with a cute babe can usually lift my spirits. This is Hannah, Steve and little Robyn. Hannah is a mama friend of mine, and Robyn and Cav are very close in age. It's been invaluable having her input and perspective through this new season in our lives.
