New Forest Photography :: Maternity Shoot with Alice

The importance of having maternity photos. Pregnancy is such a surreal time in life. There’s so many changes happening in the build up and getting ready for this new little being to enter your world. You’re unsure of exactly what lies ahead, and everyone tells you it’s the hardest and most amazing thing ever, which can be so confusing and contradicting. You give up things that you like (sushi, cheese, alcohol) not realising that these are small sacrifices compared to what’s to come. Nobody can tell you or prepare you for it. When this little person arrives, life changes forever, and you embrace it.

Taking maternity photos is such a good way to capture this in-between phase of life. While it’s in the process of changing, but hasn’t completely. It’s exciting, scary, bewildering, and beautiful. Having photos of your pregnant belly is a wonderful thing to look back on. I have a photo hanging in my son’s room of me when I was pregnant with him, and he loves pointing to my belly when I ask him where he is in the photo. Having this keepsake of this special time in my life is invaluable to me, and I hope it will be something that is special to him as well.

The best time to take maternity photos, in my opinion, is when you’re between 30 and 35 weeks. This way it’s before you get into that home stretch and you’re still comfortable enough to walk around, and get up and down from the ground. I love shooting maternity in natural locations or places with interesting architecture, or ideally a mixture of both.

Alice was such a trooper on this day and was so laid back about everything. She was easy-going and ready for everything that lay ahead. It was a pleasure shooting these for her.

I've been spending a lot of time with this little one. Our good friends' and neighbors' little girl, and it's been so fun living next door to her and watching her grow each day.  She's moments away from walking and is so awesome to hang out with.  She's 10 months and she's so much fun right now.  She's so perceptive and happy and curious about everything.  It's fun to see the world through her eyes.  I was watching her the other day and took the moment to get some new shots of her with my camera.  It's fun to get bundled up before going outside in this little bit of Florida winter we're having. Just for clarification because I get asked it ...

Sister, Sister
So I was in my home town last month. It's up in the beautiful pacific north west, and I try to take advantage of as much as I can while I'm there (we just don't have trees like this in Florida). I asked my little sister if she wanted to go for a walk with me. We had quite a few uncharacteristically sunny days while I was up there. It was so beautiful, but the days were so short. It felt like the sun had just managed to get up into the sky and it was setting again. Regardless I was spoiled. Here's my little sister. She has an adventurous spirit and is about to embark on another one. When I look at these photos, especially the close ...

I was in no way ready for this summer to end. I mean it was lovely, and it was full, and I don't feel like we missed out on anything. I just wasn't ready for it to be over. My son is the perfect age right now, and it was so fun taking him exploring, throwing rocks, going sailing, and seeing new places. I also completed 2 triathlons this summer, an olympic distance and a sprint. Something I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I was going to. I'm making plans for next spring/summer and setting goals to help me improve during the cold (dark) months. But that's just it. I really struggle with the dark months. More than the rainy weather, the sho ...
